Hear from AD Colin Fegeley on how Hudl’s fan tools have enabled Green Level to stand out in a crowded high school landscape.
Green Level High School in Cary, North Carolina sits squarely in the shadow of Tobacco Road—a region synonymous with college basketball success.
The area’s passion for athletics also extends to the high school level. “There’s nothing like Friday nights in North Carolina,” said athletic director Colin Fegeley. So when Green Level opened its doors in 2019, Fegeley knew sports would be critical for the community and a gateway for attracting students and parents alike.
“High school sports, it brings the community together,” he said. “Everybody from classmates to grandmas and grandpas, aunts and uncles come out to cheer the kids, which a lot of our student-athletes don’t get in the club environment.”
Fegeley and other school leaders believe that at Green Level, the athletic program is like the front porch of the school. Now they’re using that front porch to stand out in an area filled with other successful high schools.
Equity for Everyone
As Green Level got up and running, school leaders quickly emphasized building a brand. Every aspect mattered, from colorways and school logos to consistency across social media and the school website. Their hard work has made it easy for students to take pride in being a Green Level Gator. And Hudl's Fan Engagement Suite has brought the same pride into the community.
“With Hudl, we’ve really been able to create a digital footprint that is kind of recognizable across the state and different parts of the country just because of some of the good things we’ve done online and getting our word out,” Fegeley said.
The school’s early relationship with Hudl began when they started using Hudl and Hudl Assist for the Gator football and basketball programs. Later, the school signed up for a Hudl athletic department package, which provided them with Hudl Focus and Focus Flex cameras, allowing them to capture film from their stadium, gym and soccer road games.
That enhanced level of video allows the community to see more from their program and follow their favorite teams and athletes. With their Hudl Fan page, which features schedules, highlights, rosters and a library of Hudl TV livestreams that they’ve branded Swamp Vision, they’re able to reach new heights with fan engagement. Having everything located in one place allows anyone to follow along, from faraway grandparents watching livestreams to community members checking schedules.
“We’ve really been able to enhance, I think, what our community can see from our program and video is king,” Fegeley said. “It’s really important for folks to see that online…And it’s really just taken us to the next level where we’ve essentially kind of built our own TV channel.”
“It’s increased community engagement. We love what we’re doing with Swamp Vision and Hudl TV,” Fegeley said.
Getting Students Involved
Athletes and fans aren’t the only groups enjoying the strong levels of success. Students outside of the athletic department are making a huge impact on gameday too, and it doesn’t go unnoticed.
Green Level has a student group from a leadership and media class, called the Gators Eye, which writes sports articles, helps with social media and does video recaps of games. And just this year, Green Level installed a video board in the gym. Next year, they plan to have a team of two students run the board during basketball games.
Students have also gotten excited about the prospect of broadcasting games. Fegeley says they’re in the early stages of starting a sports media club to bring all of these activities under one roof.
Fegeley is thrilled with what he’s seen and encourages other ADs to tap into interested students who want to be involved in athletics in a different capacity.
“I think this is key for ADs around the country,” he said. “There are incredibly talented kids in your building that you might not know, who want to be involved in your athletic program. So I would just encourage you to harness that talent.”
There’s plenty of talent to go around at Green Level. That, combined with hard work and some help from Hudl, helped the school build a front porch fitting to host their ever-growing community.
